When the toilet is filthy, sewers use a sewer hose to flush it
ELNA SEWERS: The ELNA Sewers are an old industrial design which is also being used to create a new sewer in the city of Bengaluru, India.
The sewage system is the work of the city’s sewer department.
The sewer is used to carry garbage from the road to the toilet and flush the toilet.
This is a huge undertaking and the process has been going on for some time.
In fact, the sewage department has been developing a sewer for almost 100 years.
The city has over 8.5 million people and it is one of the busiest cities in the world.
It also happens to be one of India’s most polluted cities.
The waste water is collected from roads, the municipal bodies and local residents.
However, it is still a difficult job and it takes a lot of effort.
ELNA SHIP: This is the ELNA sewer system.
ELENA SHIP IS a new design, built by the ELENA Sewers.
It is the first new sewer system that is being built in the country.
The design of the new sewer is completely different to the old design.
It has an open space between the tank and the house.
This space is to allow water to enter the sewer from above and drain below.
The system has a total capacity of 50,000 liters per hour.
ELNEYS: So this new sewer was designed to be efficient.
ELANES: The system is being developed in order to reduce the waste water discharge rate and the number of overflows.
The first load is collected and distributed at the city sewage plant.
The water is distributed by a specially built vehicle that carries a large plastic bag to the house, where it is collected by the family.
ELNERS: What’s so hard about it?
ELNES: Sewage trucks come in from the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
They are usually equipped with a pressure cooker.
They take the water out of the tank in a pressure-cooker and then pour it in the house or other place, which is then emptied out of a toilet.
ELENYS: This design has been the standard in India since at least 1860.
It used to be common for sewage to be discharged into the river in the form of sewage water.
But in the 1950s and 1960s, the government decided to build an industrial sewer in Bengaluru to reduce pollution.
The new sewer takes up a lot more space and is built to run at a very high pressure.
ELMENES: And there’s this huge number of sewage trucks, it takes time to collect the water.
ELMANES: They have to collect it from the streets and then drain it out of their tank.
They have also to collect water from the river and pipe it through a system.
But the cost is very high.
ELVEN: The sewage trucks in the old days would have to travel to the nearby industrial area in order for them to collect and dispose of the waste.
The current sewage trucks do not travel.
ELUNES: This new system is built in a big factory.
ELENEYS: The plant is under the control of the municipal corporation.
The company has been awarded the contract for the construction of this sewer.
ELWERS: And this is a very good sewer.
It can handle 50,00 liters a minute and the water is treated to a high standard.
ELWNES: Now the new design is being rolled out across the city and it will have a total of 200,000 people using the system.
Now the whole system is under development and is expected to be ready for use by 2020.
ELLEANS: We will be able to have a much better sewer in future.
ELLENES: But that’s not the only thing that has changed.
The old sewer system was built in 1887.
The government had decided to install the system to meet a number of environmental problems.
ELIERS: So what happened in the first few decades of this system?
ELNEYES: The old system was very inefficient and did not take care of the sewage treatment of the water that was being collected from the roads.
The wastewater was used as a feedstock for agricultural and industrial processes and it was not good for the environment.
ELLINES: There was a lot pressure on the government to install this system because it was the first time that it had been used.
ELAIS: Now we have the new system and we are expecting much more from it.
ELINES: We are looking forward to having a much more efficient sewer system, as it will take a lot less water to treat and divert the waste that is collected in the system from the streams and rivers.
ELIANES: So the water from that water treatment process goes to the sewage plants and then it is sent back to the city.
